School 2 of the Amazon Guardian Schools Network
One morning in the woodland yardEsplugues de Llobregat, May 2017
Escola d’Educació Viva Momo, in Esplugues de Llobregat, welcomed Puwê and Vari Puyanawa on 10 May 2017. It was six days after the talk at La Canaleta: the same trip, the second school.
It did not happen in a classroom or an assembly hall. It happened in the school’s woodland yard, with the children sitting on the ground in a circle and the two leaders in the middle. Puwê was wearing his feather crown.
Afterwards they went up to a classroom, where there was an exchange with the pupils and teachers of years 3 and 4. Vari painted the faces of anyone who wanted, with traditional Puyanawa designs, one by one. And the morning closed with a dance.

How the visit went

Six days earlier, in Vila-seca
Puwê and Vari arrive in Catalonia and go into Escola La Canaleta. It is the first exchange of the network. The school in Esplugues is the next stop on the same trip.

The circle in the woodland yard
All the children sit on the ground of the woodland yard, among the trees, forming a large circle. Puwê, wearing his feather crown, tells them where his people come from, how they live and why the rainforest matters. Vari is at his side.

The exchange with years 3 and 4
After the circle they go up to a classroom. There is a closer exchange with the pupils and the teachers of years 3 and 4: questions, answers and conversation, now without the whole school in front of them.

The painted faces
Vari paints the faces of the children who want it, with traditional Puyanawa designs, one by one. It is the part that appears in most photographs of that morning.

A dance to finish
The visit closes with a traditional Puyanawa dance, as in every school in the network. Puwê and Vari always finish this way, with a dance that everyone joins.
A visit of a single morning
Escola Momo’s link with the network was that morning in May 2017. In the following school years the project did not continue at the school.
This is how the network grew: separate visits, some lasting a single day, and some that turned into years of work. Both are part of this history.
