Since 2016, media outlets, schools and local councils have covered the Amazon Guardian Schools Network, the visits of the Puyanawa people and our educational work. We have gathered those stories here. Click on each one to read a summary and, where possible, watch the video or listen to the audio without leaving this page.

L’institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras connecta amb el Sud i amb l’agricultura regenerativa local

The blog Som Escola Agroecològica reports that the four third-year secondary (ESO) groups at the Institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras (Sant Cugat del Vallès) got in touch with young Indigenous people in Colombia and Brazil through letters and videos. It was made possible by the Xarxa de Consum Solidari, MEL.Educació Ambiental, Unipau and Guardians de l’Amazònia.

The contact led the groups to take action in their own surroundings: they learned about regenerative agriculture and worked with the Xuclamel urban garden. It was a second-term project, supported by the Diputació de Barcelona.

Queralt Solsona: «Els canvis només són possibles si som conscients dels impactes ambientals»

The online newspaper elCugatenc interviewed Queralt Solsona, a member of the Associació Guardians de l’Amazònia and head of its environmental work, on the occasion of her journey to the Belém climate summit (Brazil), which she reached by crossing the Atlantic under sail.

She talks about her work with the Indigenous communities of Acre and about education as a way of “opening minds” to the effect our decisions have on distant places. On the summit, she criticises that at the COPs “the decisions end up being the oil companies’”, while noting one advance: Indigenous representation went from four delegates to a hundred and fifty.

Hora del conte (+3 anys): Els Puyanawa i l’Eruga de colors – Hêda Cêkaya, a càrrec d’Eva Folgado i d’Adolf Sanz

Molins de Rei town council announced in its listings a new session of the Hora del conte with «Els Puyanawa i l’Eruga de colors – Hêda Cêkaya», this time told by two voices, Eva Folgado and Adolf Sanz.

It took place on 4 April 2025, from 5.30 to 6.30 p.m., at the El Molí Library, for families with children aged 3 and over, with limited places and prior booking. It was organised by the community action department, the library and Guardians de l’Amazònia, as part of Cooperation Month.

First programme of Ràdio Castanyer, the online radio of the Escola Castanyer in Sant Joan les Fonts, published on iVoox on 19 February 2025. The pupils make it themselves: Year 6 prepares a news magazine, Year 4 presents a story and Year 5 a guide to the town.

The station grew out of a radio and podcast workshop run by Marta Molina (Espurna Comunicació) with Guardians de l’Amazònia, and in this first programme the pupils tell the story of the Puyanawa people and the tale of the colourful caterpillar.

Guardians of the Amazon on the Eutopías podcast

Adolf Sanz took part in the Eutopías podcast, devoted to buen vivir, where he looked back over his work in the Guardians of the Amazon project and talked about the Puyanawa story «The colourful caterpillar».

In the conversation he explained the history of the Puyanawa people and how the story links past and present events of this Amazonian community, a message of resilience tied to the project’s awareness and environmental education work. The excerpt was published as a short video on Instagram, which cannot be watched without leaving this page.

That same day, 4 January 2025, Adolf Sanz also took part in Ràdio 90’s «Pau Brasil» programme.

On 4 January 2025, the same day as the Eutopías podcast, Adolf Sanz took part in Ràdio 90’s «Pau Brasil» programme.

He explained how the Guardians de l’Amazònia project began and told the Puyanawa history behind the book «Els Puyanawa i l’Eruga de colors – Hêda Cêkaya».

Later, Year 4 pupils at the Escola Castanyer (Sant Joan les Fonts) recorded a podcast version of this story for Ràdio Castanyer.

“Today we closed the project together with the association Guardians de l'Amazònia”

Escola El Palau, in Molins de Rei, posted on its social media about the end of a year of shared work: every pupil received the storybook «Els Puyanawa i l’Eruga de colors – Hêda Cêkaya» and a letter written by the pupils of Escola Ixubãy Rabuī Puyanawa, in Acre.

The session ended with Puyanawa dances, the same ones Puwê and Txuku had taught them during their visit to the school in May 2023.

Escola El Palau joins the “Guardians de l'Amazònia” school network project run by the local NGO

Molins de Rei town council announced on its social media that Escola El Palau was joining the Amazon Guardian Schools Network (the AGSN), noting that Guardians de l’Amazònia is an association from the town itself.

The news coincided with the visit of Puwê and Txuku Puyanawa to the school on 16 May 2023.

Edition of 12 May 2023 of the morning magazine programme «Bon Dia i Bona Hora» on Ràdio Molins de Rei, a programme of about four hours.

In one of its segments, from 3 h 16 min, the station interviews Guardians de l’Amazònia: taking part are Adolf Sanz and Txuku and Puwe Puyanawa, who were visiting Catalonia. The link to the station’s website goes straight to that segment.

Puyanawa visit

Escola Guillem de Claramunt ·

The Escola Guillem de Claramunt, part of the Amazon Guardian Schools Network and a certified «green school», tells on its website about the visit it received on 10 May 2023: Puwe and his daughter, of the Puyanawa people.

The pupils were able to ask them questions and the visitors held a ritual to call for rain, something the school itself says was much needed at the time.

It was held on the ground floor of the El Molí building, with free entry and limited capacity, as part of Cooperation Month and the «Molins de 10» exhibition. Through Vari and the Puyanawa people, the story brings the Amazonian Indigenous worldview and harmony with nature closer. It was organised by the solidarity and cooperation department, the El Molí Library and Guardians de l’Amazònia.

Exposició Guardians de l’Amazònia

From 7 to 25 June 2021, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Molins de Rei hosted the exhibition «Guardians de l’Amazònia», organised by the town council’s department for community life, citizenship and volunteering.

The show, by the local NGO Guardians de l’Amazònia, was devoted to the customs and traditional way of life of the Puyanawa people, an Indigenous community in Brazil.

The story, based on real events, follows the history of the Puyanawa people: enslaved from the early twentieth century by Colonel Mâncio Lima and stripped of their language and spirituality, today their young people are reclaiming the legacy of their ancestors. Since 2017 the story has been the basis for the exchanges between Catalan schools and the Escola Ixubãy of the Puyanawa people.

Escola Guillem de Claramunt ·

The Escola Guillem de Claramunt explains that Year 4 and Year 6 pupils met Vari and Puwe, leaders of the Puyanawa people, with whom they had exchanged letters and experiences throughout the school year.

The meeting was coordinated by Guardians de l’Amazònia together with other participating schools, with the aim of raising awareness of the urgency of fighting climate change and living more sustainably.

La comunitat indígena Puyanàwa visita l’escola La Canaleta de Vila-seca

TAC12 news report on the visit of Puwê and Vari Puyanawa, teachers at the Escola Ixubãy Rabuī Puyanawa, to the Escola La Canaleta in Vila-seca. The pupils welcome them with a letter. The P5 children learn a circle dance in traditional dress, and the older pupils attend talks on life in the forest and the dangers of logging.

The school says it wants to repeat these activities every year and notes that it belongs to the Amazon Guardian Schools Network.

Un trocet de Brasil a Tarragona

Article from the readers’ section «Entre Tots» of El Periódico, written by Erika Pardo López. It recalls the history of the Puyanawa people, from the state of Acre: enslaved during the rubber boom in the early twentieth century, freed around 1950 and with their Indigenous land recognised in 2001.

It also tells how Year 3 pupils at the Escola La Canaleta in Vila-seca, who were studying climate change, became pen pals with the Puyanawa school, and how the spiritual leader Luiz Puwê and his wife Vari travelled to Vila-seca to spend a day with the children.

Item from the children’s news programme InfoK (Super3, TV3) of 9 May 2017. It explains to children the history of the Puyanawa, an Indigenous people of the Brazilian Amazon who lost their lands and suffered abuse when people came looking for business in their territory, until they were on the point of losing their culture.

It also tells how today they are reclaiming their language and customs with an album they record and present around the world, and how they want to use the proceeds to rebuild what was taken from them. The video is on the 3Cat website.

On 5 May 2017, ETV broadcast a programme with Puwê and Vari Puyanawa as guests.

The interview took place as part of Guardians de l’Amazònia’s activities in Catalonia and the presentation of the Puyanawa cultural project.

On 5 November 2016, in the village in Mâncio Lima (Acre), the community recorded the second part of their first album and the first part was presented, taped months earlier in Barcelona. The whole community took part, called together by Puwê and by the cacique Joel.

Forty-three songs had been recorded in Barcelona, of which eleven were chosen for the first album; thirteen more were recorded in the village. In those same days, drone footage was shot for the documentary.
